Nous sommes fiers de dévoiler la programmation du symposium La Louisiane francophone et ses relations internationales, qui aura lieu dans le cadre du 21e congrès bisannuel de l’American Council for Québec Studies, du 1er au 4 novembre 2018, à La Nouvelle-Orléans. Depuis plus d’un an, la CRÉAcT collabore de près avec deux collègues, Nathan Rabalais (College of William & Mary) et Robin White (Nicholls State University), ainsi qu’avec l’exécutif de l’ACQS, pour élaborer un programme riche et diversifié. Cela a été possible grâce au concours de plusieurs partenaires, à commencer par The Historic New Orleans Collection.

On behalf of the organizing committee of the special symposium La Louisiane francophone et ses relations internationales / Francophone Louisiana’s International Relations, which includes Dr. Nathan Rabalais (College of William & Mary), Dr. Robin White (Nicholls State University, and myself (Université Sainte-Anne), I wish to extend to you a heartfelt welcome and warmest thanks for your interest in the program we have prepared, and to which many of you are contributing. We also wish to express our gratitude to the numerous partners who have made this exciting symposium possible (see logos).

2018 is a special year to visit New Orleans and Louisiana. The city was founded 300 years ago, in 1718; in 1868, the state adopted a visionary constitution in the throes of Reconstruction-era struggles for civil rights, 150 years ago; and 1968 saw the creation of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana, currently celebrating its 50^th anniversary. In addition, at the recent Sommet de la Francophonie in Yerevan, Armenia, the State of Louisiana gained observer status in the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. The ACQS could not have chosen a more opportune time to host its biennial colloquium in the city of New Orleans.

Finally, for those of you who will still be here on Sunday afternoon, the Alliance française de La Nouvelle-Orléans and Éditions Tintamarre will provide another occasion to experience Louisiana’s living Francophone culture. Dr. Rabalais will launch his recent book of poetry, Le Hantage : un ouvrage de souvenance at 4:00 p.m. (Nov. 4, 1519 Jackson Ave.).

Entre 1974 et 1980, André Gladu et Michel Brault signent l’imposante série « Le son des Français d’Amérique », constituée de 27 films de 30 minutes documentant les pratiques musicales traditionnelles des cultures francophones d’Amérique. Il s’agit d’une démarche exemplaire de cinéma direct, reposant sur une relation étroite entre les cinéastes et les gens filmés en action dans leur environnement. 

We will screen the first three episodes of the series completely digitalized by NFB and restored by Éléphant: Pitou Boudreault, violoneux (Québec, coréalisation André Gladu, Michel Brault, 1974, 27 min) – Faut pas l’dire (Acadie, coréalisation Michel Brault André Gladu, 1975, 26 min) – Les Créoles (Louisiane, coréalisation André Gladu Michel Brault, 1975, 27 min). A total of more or less 90 minutes screening in Québécois, Acadian, Creole and Louisiana French.
